Experience the World’s Most Stunning Environments with Jean-Michel Cousteau

Article by Leigh Flayton 11.18.2016

The award-winning Ambassadors of the Environment program inspires Ritz-Carlton guests to explore and protect nature for a sustainable future.

Immersion is the best way to experience nature, whether it’s by exploring the depths of the ocean, kayaking through mangroves or hiking a lush, tropical rainforest. Working with oceanographic explorer-environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment program, The Ritz-Carlton helps guests engage with and learn more about the natural environment surrounding the hotels and resorts.

At Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Puerto Rico, guests can snorkel and explore a coral reef — a "city under the sea" — day or night, as well as discover a rainforest in one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems in the world.  At The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua on the Hawaiian island of Maui, favorite pastimes include guided marine tours in outrigger canoes, along with humpback whale watching in the Pacific Ocean. In Grand Cayman, participants paddle the mangroves in glass-bottom kayaks or visit the reptile recovery program in a botanical park, while in nearby St. Thomas, a coral garden provides incredible scenes to discover and document with underwater cameras.

“Being in nature is an inspiration,” says Cousteau, “and it gives those who set out to discover it a sense of well-being and peace. These sanctuaries at The Ritz-Carlton inspire us to care about where we’ve been and what we’ve seen.”

The Ambassadors program, which Cousteau co-founded with fellow environmentalist Dr. Richard Murphy, is based on four principles — everything is connected, there is no waste in nature, everything runs on energy, biodiversity is good — and the goal is to entertain and educate in an effort to build a sustainable future.

“With the Ambassadors of the Environment program, we share these experiences with our guests, reminding them of the value of nature,” Cousteau says. “They can discover the magnificent natural world, which they will remember for years to come.”

Exploring the oceans and being in the water is like entering a magical universe unlike any other.  After all these years, it still brings out the child in me, my eternal sense of wonder.

My father was a true Ambassador of the Environment.  He raised me not only to respect the environment, and appreciate its miracles, but to protect it, too. He could not have been more right.

But observing and experiencing ecosystems are two different things. Experience is what teaches us to truly value our world. In my experience, being in nature is an inspiration, and it gives those who set out to discover it, a sense of well-being and peace.

These sanctuaries at Ritz-Carlton inspire us to care about where we've been, and what we've seen.  With the Ambassador of the Environment program, we share these experiences with our guests, reminding them of the value of nature, whether exploring rainforests, coral reefs, or mangroves.  At The Ritz-Carlton, guests can discover a magnificent, natural world, which they will remember for years to come.
